Carl is the enterprise of the central characters in the strip.  He began in a modest establishment, selling fishy ice cream (both in taste and creation) and eventually grew to start his own supermarket with the money he received in the stimulus package spree. He branded it "Carl's" and it is now the workplace of Slush, Alex, and Gerrit.  Despite suspicious workings at his Carl's Creamery ice cream establishment, Carl runs a fair and legitimate business with his supermarket.  As a boss, he is a unifying leader for his employees, but, morever, as a friend, he is helpful and sympathetic, in his very own cool and business-like way.  

 

      The origin of his chartruese-colored hat is a mystery and why he keeps it turned backwards in all situations is an even greater one.  However, this defining feature singles him out from all of the other penguins.  That and his enterprising resolve, which brought him from a cardboard box and ice cooler to a grand supermarket.

 

   Stimulus money helps a lot too.
