New readers often get (understandably) confused by Cow's gender, which makes a lot of sense given that most of the characters in the strip are confused by the same thing.  For some reason, I assumed that penguins would understand what cows were, but not bulls and therefore wrote in the confusion.  I don't really have a good reason for this, but it has perpetuated through the strip ever since Cow's debut.
